  • Lowe’s pulls out of Florida project near Tampa

    According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, Lowe’s will not build a planned store in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

    The Mooresville, N.C.-based retailer reportedly invested some $3 million in the project, which was four years in the making, but decided the project wasn’t in the company’s best interest.

    The mobile sales-floor device known as the Home Depot First Phone has been described as competitive advantage for the world’s largest home improvement retailer. Now comes the “First Phone Junior,” which has begun to roll out to all Home Depot stores, said Frank Blake during the company’s first-quarter earnings call. 

  • A new way of business

    Pet supplies are one of the many non-traditional categories found at Bering’s Hardware in Houston. “People love their animals, and they take good care of them,” Augie Bering Jr. said. “You may not come to Bering’s for pet supplies, but when you walk by our department, you may think, ‘You know, I should pick up something for my dog while I’m here.’”


    This is not the only retailer reaching out in ways a traditional hardware store might not. 


    Motor oil in Lowe’s. Paper towels in Home Depot. Groceries in Menards. 


  • Lowe's CEO's pay package rose in 2010

    According to an Associated Press report, Lowes' CEO Robert Niblock's pay package rose to about $12 million in 2010, up 3% from the previous year.

    Niblock received a base salary of $1.1 million, but the bulk of his pay came in the form of stock and option grants, according to the article.
