Lowe's has a new SVP in Michael Tummillo, who is taking over the Building and Maintenance division as SVP and general merchandising manager.

In his new role, Tummillo will be responsible for the company's Lumber & Building Materials, Millwork, Tools & Hardware and Rough Plumbing & Electrical divisions.

He replaces Michael McDermott, who will now serve as CMO and direct supervisor to Tummillo.

The two North American home improvement giants will continue to operate as competitors in Canada, where Lowe’s has been growing organically for the past several years amid rumors that just such an acquisition play was in the cards.

Lowe's came in a close second.

At its annual meeting Friday, Lowe’s CEO Robert Niblock said that uncertainty remains in the marketplace, but the Mooresville, N.C.-based company is increasingly leveraging technology to build stronger relationships with customers. 

Lowe's is acquiring Maintenance Supply Headquarters, a distributor of maintenance, repair and operations products to the multifamily housing industry.

Lowe's is notifying approximately 5,200 western North Carolina customer-service employees that they could be eligible for a buyout as part of a staff reduction initiative, according to an article in the Triangle Business Journal.
