  • What breach? Sears sees no evidence of hacking

    The Secret Service was investigating a possible security breach at Sears last Friday, but the retailer issued a statement the same day announcing that it found no evidence of foul play in its systems.

    "There have been rumors and reports throughout the retail industry of security incidents at various retailers, and we are actively reviewing our systems to determine if we have been a victim of a breach," read the prepared statement. "We have found no information based on our review of our systems to date indicating a breach."

  • Amazon.com appeals to voters to overturn sales tax

    The Los Angeles Times reported that Amazon.com will continue to fight against a California law passed July 1, which requires the company to collect a 7.25% sales tax. Amazon said that the law is unconstitutional, and has now announced that it will make the case against the sales tax to voters, in hopes that they will vote to overturn it.

  • Selection trumps expertise in shopping survey

    A study of consumer shopping habits in the tools and storage categories indicates a willingness to trade advice from knowledgeable staff for a wider assortment of goods. These were the conclusions from a survey conducted this month by The NPD Group, a market research firm based in Port Washington, N.Y.

    Eighty-four percent of respondents indicated they prefer purchasing storage/organization and tool products at larger stores with many offerings, rather than at smaller stores with consultative sales staff, but limited stock.

  • Beazer Homes goes all in for Toys for Tots

    Beazer Homes is planning on donating a room's worth of toys to Toys for Tots this season, but not before adding a gamification aspect to its initiative.

    The homebuilder is launching a "Guess to Give" social media campaign, giving participants the chance to win a $250 Target gift card for correctly guessing how many toys there are in a kid's bedroom inside one of its model homes. In addition, each social media interaction will lead to more toys donated by Beazer Homes -- up to $2,500 in toy and cash donations.
