The City of Hope has received a three-year, $535,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation that will enable it to remodel the main facilities office of Hope Village, a housing complex located on the cancer center’s campus.

Hope Village provides residential units for 40 patients and their caregivers while they are undergoing cancer treatment. The grant will help upgrade electricity and plumbing and bathroom fixtures in the office, which provides shared facilities for those staying at Hope Village.

There are already more than 100 energy-efficient bulb options on Home Depot shelves today, and a multiyear phaseout of incandescent bulbs will begin in January 2012. 


Lowe’s second-quarter financial report was a disappointment to the company’s executives, who made no excuses for the retailer’s poor showing. Earnings were down slightly, revenues grew by only 1.3%, and comp-store sales were essentially flat. “Even after taking into account the challenges of the macro-environment, we are still not pleased with our performance this year,” said chairman and CEO Robert Niblock, speaking at an analysts’ conference call on Aug. 15.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s reported sales of $14.5 billion in the second quarter ended July 29, up 1.3% from the same period a year ago.

Comparable-store sales increased 0.3% in the second quarter. The company posted earnings for the quarter of $830 million, down just slightly from $832 million in the same quarter last year.

Lowe’s has hired Kevin Summers as its new chief information officer, effective July 9. He will replace Michael Brown, who announced last April that he had accepted the company’s Voluntary Separation Program and decided to retire after almost 28 years with Lowe’s.
