Big gains in the Midwest
Here’s the latest regional map of residential-construction activity.
Single-family starts surged in the latest residential construction report from the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. At a seasonally adjusted rate of 1.129 million, February had the highest seasonally adjusted rate of single-family starts since since April of 2022.
And those starts surged the most in the Midwest — up 40.2 percent compared to January, and up 80.5 percent compared to last February.

In sheer numbers, the South saw the highest rate of single-family starts in February (683,000). The South was followed by the West (204,000), the Midwest (157,000) and the Northeast (85,000).
