Video Showcase: Lowe’s brings grant to Harlem

A $500,000 Gable Grant for skilled trades development.

NEW YORK CITY—As part of a larger mission to support the development of the skilled trades, a team from Lowe’s Foundation visited Harlem to deliver a $500,000 check to Positive Workforce, a New York City-based nonprofit organization.

The high-energy ceremony, held at the Positive Workforce Learning Center in Harlem, coincided with the graduation of 30 Positive Workforce skilled-trades students.

Positive Workforce is using its grant to double the number of individuals it serves for training, industry recognized credentialing and job placement services. The organization’s mission is to help members of the local community obtain entry-level and journeyman positions in the construction industry by working with major developers and contractors.

“We are celebrating 30 new professionals into the skilled trades industry,” said Betsy Conway, director of the Lowe’s Foundation. “It’s the largest class ever for Positive Workforce’s craft program. These individuals will be going into skilled trades careers that really run the spectrum to help build New York City within the construction trades.”

The grant is part of a program that has delivered nearly $8 million in Gable Grants from the Lowe’s Foundation to nine non-profits across the country as part of its larger five-year, $50 million commitment to help prepare 50,000 people for skilled trades careers.

The Lowe’s Foundation also recently announced a new round of Gable Grants to a second cohort of community and technical colleges, bringing its skilled trades workforce investment to over $25 million.  

The 30 recent graduates of the Positive Workforce program also each received a $100 Lowe’s gift card.
