Tractor Supply rolls big in Q4

Profits jump 62.9% to $221.3 million for the period.

Tractor Supply Company turned in a sterling fourth quarter financial report as the retailer continues to prove that its "Life Out Here" strategy is more than effective.

The farm and ranch lifestyle retailer reported fourth quarter 2021 sales increased 15.3% to $3.32 billion from $2.88 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020. 

Comparable store sales increased 12.7%, as compared to an increase of 27.3% in the prior year's fourth quarter. Comp sales for the fourth quarter 2021 were driven by comparable average ticket growth and comparable average transaction count growth of 10.3% and 2.4%, respectively, the Brentwood, Tenn.-based retailer said.

Additionally, the company’s net income increased 62.9% to $221.3 million for the fourth quarter from $135.9 million for the same period a year ago.

E-commerce sales saw “strong double-digit growth” for the 38th consecutive quarter, Tractor Supply said.

During the fourth quarter, Tractor Supply opened 36 new stores and one Petsense location.

Net sales for the full year jumped 19.9% to $12.73 billion from 2020 net sales of $10.62 billion. Comp sales were up 16.9% for the year.

The company’s net income for the full year soared 33.1% to $997.1 million from $749.0 million in the prior fiscal year.

In 2021, Tractor Supply opened 80 new stores and 7 new Petsense locations. The company also closed 11 Petsense stores during the fiscal year.

At year-end, Tractor Supply operates 2,003 stores in 49 states along with 178 Petsense stores in 23 states.
