Throwback Thursday: Remember Nautilus Ned?
The Aug. 9, 1976 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, included a message from Nautilus Ned, the mascot of Hartford, Wis.-based Nautilus Industries.
Nautilus Ned was described as “The best friend of the home ventilation do-it-yourselfer," and brought to his role a strong chin, helmet hair, green sneakers and prodigious knowledge of home ventilation salesmanship, including cubic feet per minute (CFM).
Told in a comic strip format, the message painted Nautilus Ned as the key to a successful retail program., including custom displays of range and canopy hoods.
The Nautilus brand later become a trademark of Broan-NuTone, the history page of which identifies Ned as the creation of renowned cartoonist Virgil Partch, a.k.a. “VIP.” Partch also created the newspaper comic strips Big George and The Captain’s Gig, among other works.
