Throwback Thursday: Putting the "Fun" in Fundraiser

3/22/2018
The headline "David Brenner to headline Peter Grace tribute" ran in the July 15, 1985 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer. The comedian was tapped to appear at City of Hope's Spirit of Life Award event in Chicago to honor J. Peter Grace, the chairman and CEO of W.R. Grace & Co.

The event benefited CIty of Hope, the Duarte, Calif.-based cancer research and medical center. An accompanying photo shows Grace, above left, with a scale model of the early pioneering City of Hope cobalt unit for cancer radiation treatment.

Little is known about Brenner's performance for the Hardware/Home Improvement Industry Council in Chicago that summer. But Brenner was near the top of his comedic powers in 1985, or maybe slightly past peak. Here is a typical Brenner performance from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1983.
