Throwback Thursday: Jerry's knows all

3/5/2018
The March 21, 1988 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, recognized a variety of industry players for their advertising acumen. Among the “Golden Hammer” award winners: Jerry’s Building Materials, of Eugene, Ore.

Jerry’s took home the award for “Best TV Ad Campaign” in the under $25 million category. Here’s what the editors said at the time:

“Jerry’s Building Materials in Eugene, Ore., clearly demonstrated in its Golden Hammer-winning ‘Answer Desk’ campaign that its stores were prepared to go to great lengths to answer its customers’ questions.”

Also: “Jerry’s used its TV campaign to show that its employees were never stumped for an answer, even to the old sage’s question, “What is the meaning of life?”

Much has changed at Jerry’s since 1988, including a name change to Jerry’s Home Improvement. The retailer also opened a second store in 2003, in Springfield, Ore.
