Throwback Thursday: Bad news for Slumber Lumber

1/24/2019
Before digital communications, editors of National Home Center News — the forerunner of Hardware + Building Supply Dealer – frequently recreated television commercials in print.

Case in point: this mid-1980s beauty from Forest Warehouse City. The commercial depicts a board meeting of the fictional lumberyard company: Slumber Lumber.

The captions  beneath each still shot tell the story.

Caption 1: Chairman: “… Slumber Lumber is in big trouble. Forest City has changed to Forest Warehouse City …” The Board: “Oh, no!”

Caption 2: Chairman: “Look at this. They’re totally new. Huge warehouse home centers with low warehouse prices.”

Caption 3: Board director: “Low warehouse prices on everything?”

Caption 4: Chairman: “Everything we have plus a thousand times more.”

Caption 5: Chairman, in disgust: “Forest Warehouse City! Lucky for us there’s only three of them …” (now five.)

A few years later in 1987, Handy Andy bought Forest City’s home improvement business.
