Throwback Thursday: A new, true headquarters

1/17/2019
The Jan. 22, 1996 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, included this photo of a massive pair of scissors cutting the ribbon for True Value’s new 165,000 sq. foot headquarters. Wielding the scissors in the photo are Cotter & Co.’s President Dan Cotter, left; and COO Steve Porter.

The caption reads: “Cotter said the company’s spirit and brand were built over 30 years in it its immense, old headquarters downtown. That was moved – along with 500 employees, 5,000 boxes and400,000 pounds of office files and equipment – to the new offices near O’Hare International Airport.”

The official ceremony took place Dec. 19, 1995. True Value continues to operate out of the office space, officially known as the True Value Company Retail Support Center.

BONUS THROWBACK: The True Value article shared the page with a story under the headline: “Orgill Bros. acquires fellow distributor Odell.”

Odell was based in Greensboro, N.C. Odell President Tom McGoldrick would remain with the company. “Odell is a fine company with an excellent market position,” said Orgill Bros. President William Fondren at the time. “[The acquisition] provides us with additional geography and it obviously adds to our business.”
