Throwback Thursday: Sears and appliances
In 2003, Sears was still the king of the appliance category.
The June 16, 2003 issue of Home Channel News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, published a front-page article with a headline that would become increasingly familiar as the decade progressed: "Sears under siege."
The lead reads: "Although Sears is still the king of the hill when it comes to appliance sales, the retailer is revamping the appliance departments in its stores in an attempt to fed off increased competition from retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's."
A lot has happened to Sears since 2003, most notably a steady drumbeat of store closing announcements. One thing that did not happen was a successful defense of its appliance business. These days, the top three appliance retailers are Lowe’s, The Home Depot and Best Buy.
