San Jose sits atop the list. And Boston is moving up.

The list was released this week by the home improvement web site Houzz.com as its  “U.S. Houzz & Home 2020 Renovation Trends” survey revealed the top 10 U.S. Metropolitan areas by median renovation spend in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Here are the latest top 10 and the median renovation spend:

1. San Jose, Calif. ($26,000)
2. Boston, Mass. ($21,000)
3. Los Angeles, Calif. ($20,000)
4. Miami, Fla. ($20,000)
5. San Diego, Calif. ($20,000)
6. San Francisco, Calif. ($20,000)
7. New York, N.Y. ($18,500)
8. Phoenix, Ariz. ($16,750)
9. Sacramento, Calif. ($16,000)
10. Austin, Texas ($15,000)

Houzz said the national median spend was $13,000.

San Jose has ranked first in each of the last three years. Boston ranked 6th in 2018 and 7th in 2017.

Although considerably less than repeat leader San Jose, Boston now reports the second highest median renovation spend by metro area.

“Although considerably less than repeat leader San Jose, Boston now reports the second highest median renovation spend by metro area," Houzz stated. "These are followed closely by expensive coastal metros including Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego and San Francisco ($20,000 each).

New York City fell out of the top five, while Houston, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. all fell out of the top 10. Newcomers to the 2019 list are Phoenix and Austin. Also, San Diego rejoined the top 10, after missing the 2018 list.

The Houzz & Home survey project is now in its ninth year. It’s described as the largest survey of residential remodeling activity with more than 87,000 U.S. respondents.
