Retailers score big in January
The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s monthly retail report shows a gain for building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers (NAICS 444).
That growth played out against a backdrop of healthy retail spending across the board. U.S. retail sales in January increased 3 percent – a significant increase over expectations for a 2 percent increase in January.
NAICS 444 sales in January, on an unadjusted basis, were $34.904 billion, that’s up 3.4 percent from $33.771 billion in January of 2022.
On an adjsted basis, NAICS 444 sales in January were up slightly from December 2022.
Meanwhile, sales for the retail subset of hardware stores (NAICS 44413) showed gains for for December and the full year.
For the month of December, on an unadjusted basis, hardware stores generated $3.59 billion in sales, up from $3.269 billion in December 2022.
For the full year, NAICS 44413 2022 sales were $40.734 billion, up from $37.765 billion in 2021.
