Residential construction by the numbers
The latest residential construction report presented a mixed-bag of statistics to a hosing market weighed down by high interest rates. Total housing starts were up 7.0 percent for the month, but down 7.2 percent for the year.
Ups and downs are represented all over the regional residential construction infograph:
Among the numbers that jump out from the chart are the declines across the board in the Northeast, where total starts are down 43.9 percent from a year ago, and single-family starts are down 21.7 percent. The only category where the region was not in negative numbers was month-to-month single family starts, which were flat in September.
The largest positive number came in the Midwest, where September's total starts were up 35.3 percent from August.
