America Recycles Day® on Mon., Nov. 15, is a key time to focus on companies that take the extra step to recycle during everyday product manufacturing processes, noted fuel and water container maker Scepter.

The Miami, Okla.-based firm, recycles and reuses almost 100% of the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste created in the process of making durable containers, it related.

“As HDPE waste naturally occurs in the manufacturing process, we regrind and reuse it,” said Daniel Marshall, vice president of marketing and business development.

“These sturdy containers are all made of multi-layered HDPE. That’s how we can use both virgin HDPE and the regrind HDPE in the creation of the same container.”

HDPE is a lightweight, safe and durable thermoplastic. The material itself has no negative effects on the environment, which is one of the reasons Scepter uses the plastic in its manufacturing process, it said.

“In addition to the regrind procedures for HDPE, our facilities recycle everything from wooden pallets to the ink cartridges used in our offices,” said Loyd Qualls, site leader with Scepter. “Scrap metal is recycled. Plastic and cardboard are recycled,” he added.

“This dedication to smart manufacturing practices showcases how deeply we feel about the earth,” Qualls noted. “Being a responsible manufacturer has benefits for our customers, our employees and the environment.”

The company related that several layers of HDPE create a strong, long-lasting container, used by consumers and military worldwide to safely store and transport clean water and an assortment of fuels.

Scepter has two manufacturing locations in North America and has more than 300 employees at the plants. The teams are dedicated to environmental practices and recycling efforts 365 days a year.

Each year, America Recycles Day serves to remind all people to reduce, reuse and repurpose.

America Recycles Day, coming Monday, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S.
