Poll question: A year of starts
In 2020, there were 1,379,600 housing starts in the United States. That’s up 6.9% from 2019.
So far this year, through July, housing starts are running ahead of the previous year by 21.8%. (933,600 to 766,600).
Interesting stat: Already in 2021, the United States has seen more total housing starts than in any single year between 2008 and 2013.
This week’s poll question attempts to look into the near future at the end-of-year figure for residential construction. Here are two scenarios to help inform reader predictions:
Scenario 1: If housing starts mirror last year’s growth rate (7%), the full-year 2021 housing starts figure would be 1,476,172.
Scenario no. 2: If housing starts maintain the 22% year to date gain, the full-year 2021 housing starts figure would be 1,683,112.
