There was a time not long ago, when container ships were lining up for miles and waiting for slots to unload foreign-made products at American container ports, and. then waiting for trucks and drivers to disperse the loads to distribution centers and stores throughout the land.
This was the height of the pandemic-induced supply chain disruption. And, by the way, the cost of renting a shipping container was going through the roof.
At that time, a question emerged for American supply chain stakeholders. If it’s such a challenge to source products overseas, then why not turn to domestic sources?
The answer came back, in so many words: you can’t just flip a switch and turn the global supply chain network on its head. To do so would take time.
Time has passed since the supply chain crack up. But is the industry any closer to a more domestic base of manufacturing?
That’s the backdrop for this week’s HBSDealer poll question.
