Wheeler’s Building Materials, the three-state pro dealer chain that experienced rapid growth through early 2007, will lay off 264 employees at its headquarters in Rome, Ga., and two other nearby facilities, according to the Rome News-Tribune.
Wheeler’s reportedly reduced its head count from 1,000 to approximately 450 last year, due to a downturn in the Atlanta market.
Wheeler’s also closed two plants in Charlotte, N.C., and facilities in Dalton, Calhoun, Newnan, Morrow, Madison and Cartersville, according to the newspaper, as well as selling a plant in Birmingham.
Wheeler’s ranked 27th on HCN’s Top 350 Pro Dealers list in 2007, with sales of $250 million.
