WCLMBA honoring Red Emmerson
SACRAMENTO – The West Coast Lumber & Building Material Association (WCLBMA) is honoring Sierra Pacific co-founder Archie “Red” Emmerson with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his industry contributions and high caliber of forestry management.
The recognition is part of the WCLBMA’s Annual Convention, which begins here today. The association will officially present Emmerson with the award at its President’s Dinner on Nov. 14.
Emmerson co-founded R.H. Emmerson & Son with his father in 1949 when they leased a sawmill and lumber business in Oregon. The company expanded its lumber and land interests before it was incorporated in 1969 as Sierra Pacific Industries.
Based in Anderson, Calif. the company is celebrating its 70th anniversary and now owns and manages more than two million acres of timberland in California and Washington. Sierra Pacific is recognized as one of the largest lumber producers and private landowners in the United States.
At age 90, Emmerson is still involved with the company. Now in its third-generation Emmerson’s sons George and Mark, manage the business, with four of his grandchildren involved in day-to-day operations at the company.
Sierra Pacific’s current operations include 14 sawmills, two millwork production facilities, a remanufacturing plant, two bark plants, seven cogeneration facilities, and three window and door manufacturing plants.
The WCLBMA said that Emmerson has upheld his father’s philosophy of treating each team member with respect and dignity, promoting a company culture of transparency, and giving them the tools and opportunities to excel at their work.
“At Sierra Pacific Industries, they believe healthy trees, good water quality and enduring wildlife habitat are the natural result of sound forest management practices,” said Mark Boone, president and COO of Champion Lumber and president of the WCLBMA.
The company also adheres to the environmental protection standards of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and sustainably manage their forests using practices that surpass California and Washington forestry requirements, according to the WCLMBA.
Emmerson’s daughter Carolyn also manages the Sierra Pacific Foundation, which has provided more than $8-million in higher education scholarships and supports community activities across the West.
“The stories of this man and his philosophy of treating everyone in the company with respect and dignity, and the company’s sound forest management practices make them a model for what business should be,” Boone said.
