Vinyl is king for exterior use
A report by the NABH says most homes under construction last year went with vinyl.
Vinyl and stucco were the most commonly used exterior wall materials on single-family homes started in 2017, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Based on data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction (SOC), about 27% of new homes that began construction in 2017 used vinyl siding with 25% using stucco.
Roughly 21% went with brick or a brick veneer followed by 20% using fiber cement siding, including Hardiplank or Hardiboard.
Just 5% of single-family homes used a wood or wood product exterior with only 1% reporting the use of stone or rock.
The NAHB also reported that vinyl siding was the most widely used exterior material in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, with more than 70% using the product. In the Mid-Atlantic, use was as high as 76%.
In the East North Central U.S., including Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, 61% of homes had vinyl installed.
In the West South-Central region, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, brick was the most used product at 67%.
Stucco, however, was the most used product in the Pacific coast and Mountain regions, at 63% and 49%.
