Trump sends message to home builders
President Donald Trump made it clear that he’s a big supporter of the home building industry.
Trump sent a video message to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and commended the hard work of its members via a video message played at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.
“You people I know very well. I like that business, I’ve always like that business,” Trump said. “And it’s never been better than it is right now.”
The president was referring to the latest housing starts report. Housing starts in December soared 16.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.608 million from the revised November estimate of 1.375 million, according to the latest report from the Department of Commerce. The latest figures are also 40.8% above the December 2018 rate of 1.142 million.
Single‐family housing starts in December were at a rate of 1.055 million, up 11.2% from the revised November rate of 949,000.
Trump also pointed to the hurdles home builders face, including costly state regulations that drive up the prices on houses.
“Regulations we’ve cut massively,” he said. “I think you know what we’ve done in terms of the environment of regulations – regulations, which were making it impossible for you to build.”
But the president also singled out California as a state that has been particularly difficult for builders. “We have states where the state regulations are horrible and somebody has to do something about it.”
