Throwback Thursday: Summer of 77 rivals
In the Advertising/Promotion section of the May 23, 1977 issue of National Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, two pairs of cross-town rivals met on the baseball field – the Yankees and the Mets, and Channel and Rickel.
Under a headline that reads: “Channel, Rickel back baseball to catch NY’s DIY sales,” the article explains that New Jersey home center competitors Channel and Rickel were sponsoring broadcasts of the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, respectively.
The article reported that both chains were “trying to appeal to the male-oriented audiences who represent a good cross-section of the do-it-yourself market.”
Led by Reggie Jackson, the Yankees eventually went on to win the 1977 World Series, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers four games to two.
