Throwback Thursday: Payless Cashways
The Dec. 12, 1983 issue of Home Center News, the forerunner of HBSDealer, dedicated a full issue to one of the industry's up-and-coming and innovative home center chains -- Payless Cashways.
The article explained that the Kansas City-based company's blueprint for success, including a move beyond LBM, "could catapult it into the ranks of the nation's premier retailers." At its peak, it operated just under 200 stores, but the chain struggled through the 1990s.
