Suspect refuses to surrender
A man suspected of stealing tools and drill bits from a Lowe’s store in Madison Heights, Mich., is being held on several charges after leading police on two different foot chases, according to an article in the Daily Tribune. After being flagged down by a Lowe’s employee, Madison Heights police pursued Rusty Lee Cernuto into a nearby trailer park. A K-9 officer was sent to apprehend Cernuto, but the 28-year-old suspect wrestled with the police dog. An officer shot Cernuto with a Taser gun, but he continued fighting. It eventually took three officers to subdue and handcuff the suspect.
Police recovered $321 worth of stolen items, including a nail gun, a coping saw and various drill bits from the suspect's van, according to the newspaper report.
Cernuto was taken to the police station, where authorities said he tried to fake a seizure and then demanded to be taken to the hospital for an injured arm. Police complied, and when the suspect’s handcuffs were removed for an x-ray, he bolted from the room, pushing down an officer who stood behind a glass panel.
After a foot chase through the hospital, Cernuto was eventually caught outside the building. He again resisted arrest and was Tasered.
Certuno has a lengthy criminal history for substance abuse and assaultive behavior toward police, authorities said. He was charged with fleeing and eluding police, assaulting and obstructing officers, retail fraud and driving on a suspended license. His bond was set at $154,000, according to the Daily Tribune.
