Staycation to be one of four major trends at National Hardware Show
Staycation -- the idea that Americans are traveling less and putting more money into their homes, particularly their outdoor spaces -- will be one of four major themes at this year’s National Hardware Show, according to Ed Several, group VP and show manager for Reed Exhibitions.
This is the first time staycation will be featured as a section at the Hardware Show, which will be held May 5 to 7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It will be sponsored by Char-Broil, a leading U.S. producer of gas grills, which is returning as an exhibitor at the show after a six-year absence.
“Staycation is the idea that people are not just staying home for vacations, but they’re staying in their houses more often,” Several told HCN in a recent interview. “So they may be taking fewer trips to an amusement park, going out to dinner less often, and their house needs to be comfortable.
“They’ll make those minor repairs on their house that probably before would go without addressing, all the way up to making their house more comfortable with expanded areas outside and, of course, more comfortable living inside,” Several continued. “And if they can do it themselves, of course, that’s a huge opportunity from a home improvement standpoint.”
Part of the lawn and garden area, staycation will showcase hands-on testing and education about the latest in grills, outdoor furnishings, accessories, storage and coverings. Char-Broil will be flanked by Southern Patio and other companies that will feature items like chairs, umbrellas and tables meant to enhance outdoor spaces.
“We really want to drive home the idea of all of the benefits of merchandising staycation within a retail environment,” Several said.
In addition to staycation, the show’s other trends focus on the DIY consumer, saving energy and the green movement.
