Retail sales rise in January

Retail and food service sales edged up 0.2% to $504.4 billion in January and rose 2.3% above January 2018, the U.S. Census Bureau reported on Monday morning.

But the The November 2018 to December 2018 percent change was revised from a 1.2% drop to a 1.6% decline.  Retail trade sales were up 0.2% from December 2018, and 1.9% above last year.

January retail results were delayed by the partial shutdown of the federal government, which ended on Jan. 25.

Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers were up 10.4% to $28.03 billion from January 2018 sales of $25.39 billion, while nonstore retailers were up 7.3% from last year.
