REPORT: Target joins tariff opposition

9/24/2018
As the trade war between the United States and China continues to heat up, Target has become the latest major retailer to reveal its opposition to the Trump Administration’s foreign trade policy.

Target has become the latest in a long list of retailers and associations who have voiced disapproval of increase tariffs, including Walmart, the National Association of Home Builders, and the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association. Altogether about 300 retailers have sent a letter of opposition to U.S. trade officials.

In a report from CNBC, Target said it is “deeply troubled” by the trade policy saying the end result will be raising prices and hurting American consumers. Walmart echoed the same sentiments last week.

"We are disappointed that despite broadly expressed concerns from companies and groups across a variety of industries, the administration has continued to escalate the threat of tariffs that would penalize American families," Target's chief merchandising officer, Mark Tritton, said in a letter earlier this month.

Two days ago it was revealed that China had cancelled planned trade talks with the United States.
