REPORT: Alexander Lumber shuts down Geneseo location
Alexander Lumber, the Aurora, Ill.-based pro dealer, has closed its location in Geneseo.
According to a report by the Moline Dispatch & Rock Island Argus, the location failed to garner enough support from the builders despite have a presence in the community for years.
In a statement issued by the company, Alexander marketing manager Lisa Roberts said, “The lumber market has been volatile in 2018.”
“With down Illinois economy, the market conditions necessitated the decision to shutter this lumberyard,” she added.
The dealer will continue to operate 19 locations in the state along with a yard in Iowa City, Iowa. The Geneseo yard, which offered cabinet design, estimating, millwork and other services and products, is located about 30 miles west of Davenport, Iowa, and more than 150 miles east of Chicago.
During the recent Pro Dealer Industry Summit, held last month in Alexander’s back yard of Chicago, CEO Russ Kathrein spoke of how the Alexander family helped keep the business alive during difficult times and the Great Recession by pumping their own cash back into the business.
“We acknowledge that closing a yard is painful for everyone involved. It isn’t a decision we’ve made lightly,” Kathrein said in statement. “We truly appreciate our loyal builder customers and thank them for their support over the last 36 years.”
