Readers respond: Patriotism vs. Pocketbook
As the Chicago Tribune reports here, a consumer survey from the AP-GfK found that Americans are more interested in saving money than buying American.
The report gave an example. In it, one imaginary pair of pants cost $85 and is made in the USA. Another pair of the same fabric and design costs $50 and is an import. Two-thirds of the respondents said they’d buy the cheaper version.
Before reading too much into that example, consider that apparel is one industry, and hardware and building supply is another.
