Readers Respond: Overtime is overdue
HBSDealer surveyed its readers twice about the upcoming changes to federal overtime rules.
Once last fall, when the proposal was being bandied about. And again last month, when the U.S. Department of Labor made things official (but with a slightly lowered threshold).
Under the rule, which goes into effect on Dec. 1, 2016, salaried employees making less than $913 per week ($47,476 annually) will be eligible for overtime pay. That's a little less than the original proposed threshold of under $50,440 per year, but significantly higher than the current threshold of $23,360 per year.
Though many in the business lobby oppose the changes, our readership came out in favor of the change, with 55% of 220 voters siding with the decision.
Though 35% believed in a more free-market solution, an additional 10% agreed that the threshold needed to be raised, but not quite that high.
