Readers Respond: Orange vs. Blue

5/31/2018
Home Depot and Lowe's are engaged in the home improvement industry's biggest rivalry. And coming out on top, quarter-after-quarter, is the orange box. This week's HBSDealer.com poll question asks "why?"

There's an old saying in the business that goes: "location, location, location." But "Stores/location" ranked low on the list of reasons for Home Depots' recent success over its rival. Leading the list of reasons was "Management/execution."

With more than 250 voters tallied, here's the breakdown on "Why has Home Depot outperformed Lowe's in recent years:"

  • Management/execution — 27%

  • Pro emphasis — 24%

  • All of the above — 17%

  • Merchandise — 12%

  • Digital emphasis — 11%

  • Stores/locations — 8%

  • None of the above — 2%
