Sales were up big at Home Depot in the fourth quarter. One of the reasons, big sales.

Growth in big ticket sales of 9.8% helpeed the company post a record quarter. But Home Depot isn't the only company that seeks to maximize transactions. Everyone is doing it. But some are doing it better than others.

In a recent poll, HBSDealer asked for the best way to boost their average customer transaction amount. Specifically, the poll question asked: "What's your best advice to a retailer who wants to profitably boost their average ring?"

Invest in training of sales force — 47%
Focus on selling project, not product — 32%
Introduce more big-ticket items — 6%
Boost visibility of impulse items at checkout — 6%
Invest in price optimization software — 5%
Feature more big brands — 2%
Raise prices — 2%
