Readers respond: Absolutely Prefabulous

10/5/2018
A plurality of readers believe that prefab housing will be a major player in the housing industry’s not-too distant future.

At least that’s what the latest HBSDealer poll question found. Specifically, HBSDealer asked: “What’s your take on the future of manufactured housing?”

With more than 100 votes cast, here are the results:

  • “Prefab housing will be a major player in the not-too-distant future.” -- 44%

  • “Respectable growth as technology improves.” -- 35%

  • “Slow growth and a continued niche role in the housing industry.” -- 22%.

According to the Manufactured Housing Institute, 22 million people live in manufactured homes. And the same source estimates that 10% of new home starts fall in the category of manufactured housing.

The manufactured housing industry garnered the interest of none other than Amazon.com, which recently announced an investment in Plant Prefab – a Rialto, Calif.-based prefabrication company.

Plant Prefab manufactures custom single and multi-family homes that are “high-quality, sustainable, healthy and durable,” the company says, noting that it’s the first home factory in the nation focused on sustainable construction, materials, processes, and operations.
