Poll results: Attitudes on CEO Pay

5/3/2019
HBSDealer’s latest poll question, inspired by the news reports questioning the sanity of high-eight-figure salaries, reveals 64% of respondents feel CEO salaries are out of control.

Specifically, the question reads: "Are CEO salaries out of control?" After more than 275 votes, the responses were:

  • Yes, 64%

  • Depends on the CEO, 30%

  • No, 17%.

The question was spurred by the media's recent examination of the salary of Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Co. -- $65.6 million. The figure (but not the performance of Iger) was criticized by none other than Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Roy Disney.

“Let me very clear,” Disney tweeted. “I like Bob Iger. I do NOT speak for my family but only for myself. Other than owning shares (not that many) I have no more say in what happens there than anyone else. But by any objective measure a pay ratio over a thousand is insane.”

Then again, if the shareholder-elected compensation committee believes there is value for dollar in a seven-figure salary for a chief executive, well then, that’s just the price you pay in competitive business environment.
