PLM’s Smith honored by NLBMDA
CHICAGO - John Smith, CEO and president of Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company (PLM), was honored by the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) at its recent Installation Dinner held in conjunction with the 2018 ProDealer Industry Summit.
Smith was presented with the NLBMDA’s Chairman's Award in front of an audience of leading pro dealers at the event held at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel.
Smith started his career at Aetna Casualty as a property underwriter in 1997. He joined CNA in 1979 where he worked through the ranks to become the Northwest Regional Vice President in 1996 after many positions up and down the East Coast.
Smith joined PLM in 1998 and, under his leadership, the insurance firm has grown from a regional player to a market leader in the industry. PLM insures 6,000 wood-related businesses in 48 states, developing over $230 million of written premium.
Active in the insurance and wood-related industries, Smith has served on a number of boards of directors including: the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISOP), the Western Hardwood Association (WHA) and the Firemen’s Hall Museum in Philadelphia. He is a past chairman of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and has recently rejoined that board of directors, where he serves as its Political Action Committee chair. He serves as a trustee on the Griffith Insurance Educational Leadership Council and The Institutes Board. John is also a member of the board of the Hardwood Federation and its Political Action Committee (PAC).
John currently is an active member of NLBMDA’s Manufacturers and Services Council and also serves on NLBMDA’s Investment Oversight Committee. PLM is not only a strong supporter of NLBMDA but also many of its state and regional associations.
"On behalf of the NLBMDA and lumber and building materials industry, we thank John for his continued support year after year," said Immediate Past Chair Rick Lierz. "His dedication to education and community engagement has been recognized by many organizations and we are honored to have had the opportunity to partner with him and PLM. We are especially grateful for his service and leadership on NLBMDA's Investment Oversight Committee, which has been invaluable."
