Owens Corning expands Shingle Recycling Program

2/20/2018

Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt LLC is expanding its Shingle Recycling Program, which helps homeowners and contractors divert shingles from landfills.

According to Owens Corning, roughly 20 billion pounds of recyclable shingles are removed each year in the U.S. When repurposed, the material can be used in road construction and repair.

“As part of Owens Corning’s commitment to safeguarding, sustaining and improving the environment for the benefit of current and future generations, we are proud of the sustainable impact the Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt Shingle Recycling Program has had helping homeowners and contractors divert shingle waste from local landfills," said Frank O'Brien-Bernini, Owens Corning chief sustainability officer. “Our Shingle Recycling Program continues to demonstrate Owens Corning’s careful consideration for product life-cycle management, from design and manufacturing to durable service and end-of-life recycling."

The Shingle Recycling Program was originally launched in 2009, and has achieved such milestones as recycling 2.4 billion pounds of shingles in 2014 (up 33% from the previous year).

The program is available in 108 markets and maintains more than 200 collection locations, enabling 65% of U.S. residents to access the program.
