Not your average lumberyards (but close)

2/20/2018

What are the metrics of a typical pro dealer? In the real world, there is no meaningful answer. But in a mathematical sense, there is.

Extracted from the Top 200 Pro Dealer Scoreboard, the chart below reveals the mean, the median and the mode of three key metrics from the 200 leading companies.

Quick review: the mean is the average, the median is the value in the middle of a series, and the mode is the most frequent value in a series.

No company matched the metrics perfectly, but several came close. Interestingly, Foxworth-Galbraith, No. 28 on the Top 200, appearsas the most typical in the mean category for the second consecutive year. Foxworth operates 22 units throughout the Southwest. It's slogan: "Go where the pros go!"

Representing the median pro dealer, No. 109 Jaeger Lumber is a family owned and operated dealer serving New Jersey from seven locations. Also like many family lumber yards, it evolved over the decades from its hardware store origins.

Carrying the flag of the mode is No. 139 Garris Evans Lumber, which says on its website that it provides the same quality service to pro builders as it provides to homeowners.
