NAICS 444 sales up slightly

The latest report on retail sales shows the hardware and building supply industry growing modestly in March.

The Advance monthly sales for retail and Food Services, released Thursday morning, estimates NAICS 444 –  the broad category of building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers – increased 3.3% compared to March 2018, and increased 0.3% compared to February 2019

Compared to other kinds of businesses, NAICS 444 turned in a middle-of-the-pack performance compared to a year ago, but a near-the-bottom performance compared to the prior month.

Non-store retailers were up 11.6% increase compared to a year ago, the highest gain among 13 categories. On a monthly-basis, gas stations gained 3.5%, lifted by the slow and steady rise of gas prices.

On an unadjusted basis, Census estimated NAICS 444 sales for March of $31,730,000,000.

Overall advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for March 2019 were $514.1 billion, up 1.6% on an adjusted basis from the previous month, and 3.6% above March 2018.
