Inside $523.5 billion in retail sales
The latest Advance Monthly Sales report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows July sales for building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers – NAICS 444 – were down 2.9% compared to July 2018.
The good news: sales were up 0.2% compared to the prior month.
The NAICS 444 year-over-year downturn stands in stark contrast to the 16.0% gain among non-store retailers. Other categories that performed well were miscellaneous store retailers (up 6.0%); Health & personal care retailers (up 4.3%), and grocery stores (up 3.7%).
There were only two of 16 classifications that posted lower sales gains than NAICS 444 -- department stores (down 4.7%) and electronics and appliance stores (down 3.5%).
Overall, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that U.S. retail and food services sales for July , on an adjusted basis, were $523.5 billion, up 0.7% from the previous month, and up 3.4% from July 2018.
On an unadjusted basis, NAICS 444 sales were estimated at $33,918,000,000 for July.
