Home Depot drops plan for San Francisco store

2/20/2018

Home Depot will not be opening its long-awaited store in San Francisco due to the slowdown in the home improvement market, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The proposed unit on Bayshore Boulevard, once home to Goodman’s Lumber, was the site of a pitched battle between the Atlanta retailer, neighborhood activists and local hardware store owners intent on keeping Home Depot out of the city limits. In November 2005, after years of hearings and appeals, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the project, a two-level urban format with underground parking.

Prior to the Bayshore Boulevard site, Home Depot had tried, unsuccessfully, to open stores on other San Francisco parcels. The company’s attempts to penetrate the city stretch back over a decade.
