Hardy Knox honored as a top executive
Maggie Hardy Knox, president of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, has been named a 2019 Fox Rothschild Outstanding CEO and Top Executive by the Pittsburgh Business Times.
Hardy Knox was recognized with 14 other honorees from across western Pennsylvania at a reception on April 17, at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in Pittsburgh.
According to the publication, “Each of the 15 honorees provides a great example to their teams and to the western Pennsylvania business community. Rather than taking credit for their organization’s successes, these leaders praise their employees for making it happen.”
“Receiving this award is truly an honor,” said Hardy Knox. “My success really comes at the hands of my associates at 84 and Nemacolin. I take direction from them versus the other way around. It’s because of them that both businesses are thriving, and for that I’m incredibly grateful.”
Hardy Knox assumed leadership of 84 Lumber from her father and company founder Joe Hardy in 1992 at age 26. One year later, the business reached $1 billion in annual sales for the first time after Hardy Knox refocused efforts on professional builders. Since then, she has made various strategic moves that have helped 84 Lumber grow beyond a traditional building materials supplier.
Today, the company provides installation services, kitchen and bath design studios, and custom millwork shops.
The pro dealer has also been undergoing a technological transformation since the hiring of its first chief information officer, Paul Yater, in 2017. With a robust technology strategy in place, 84 Lumber said it is in prime position to increase efficiencies, improve processes and enhance customer service.
“We’re always adapting,” said Hardy Knox. “The reason we’ve been around for almost seven decades is because we pay attention to what customers need and make necessary changes to accommodate them. We’re not a one-dimensional business.”
In addition to leading 84 Lumber, Hardy Knox also owns Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa. The luxury destination spot features the AAA Five-Diamond Falling Rock boutique hotel and the Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond restaurant Lautrec. It was named one of the World’s Most Luxurious Hotels in 2018 by Forbes.
Based in Eighty Four, Pa., 84 Lumber Company is the nation’s largest privately held supplier of building materials with nearly 250 stores, component manufacturing plants, custom door shops, custom millwork shops and engineered wood product centers in more than 30 states.
