EPA recognizes Lowe’s for 10th consecutive year

12/19/2018
Lowe’s has been presented with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Excellence Award for the 10th year in a row.

The SmartWay Excellence Award is the U.S. EPA’s highest recognition for demonstrated leadership in freight supply chain energy and environmental performance. Lowe’s is the first industry partner to garner the award 10 times.

Award recipients are selected from more than 3,700 companies and organizations and represent the top performing, environmentally responsible shippers and logistics firms that exhibit leadership by shipping more goods more miles with lower emissions and less energy.

“Lowe’s is constantly striving to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Chris Cassell, Lowe’s director of corporate sustainability. “We want to thank our conscientious suppliers who make these awards possible. In the past 10 years of our participation, Lowe’s carriers have saved more than 225 million gallons of fuel and reduced our carbon emissions by more than 2.3 million tons of carbon dioxide – the equivalent to removing more than 509 million cars from the road.”

SmartWay partners help reduce harmful air pollutants and contribute to better air quality. Emissions from all modes of freight transportation are assessed and monitored, including truck, rail, barge, air and multi-modal.

Since 2004, SmartWay partners have avoided emitting more than 103 million metric tons of harmful air pollution, while saving more than 215 million barrels of oil and $29.7 billion in fuel costs.
