Decking market on stable ground
New single-family home decking market remains steady.
The decking market is on solid ground when it comes to new home construction, according to recent analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
With 850,000 single-family homes started in 2016, nearly 24% include decks the NAHB said. The association based its findings on data from Survey of Construction (SOC), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The prior report indicated that 23.7% of single-family home starts included a deck.
About 25% of new single-family homes had decks from 2005 to 2008 with the number rising to 27% in 2007 and 2008. The number dropped to 25% in 2009 and continued to decline to 22.2% by 2012.
In New England, 62% of new single-family homes included decks, followed by 51% in the East South Central states, and 45% in the West North Central states. In contrast, just 4% of new homes had deck in the West South Central, including Texas.
Composites and treated woods are the most common material used to build new home decks, the NAHB said. Use of cedar, a species that doesn’t need special treatment, is also common, especially in the Middle Atlantic and Mountain divisions. Plastic materials – including PVC – are also used to build new home decks, but primarily confined to the New England states.
