Data details garage-clutter problem
Americans have a clutter issue -- and the garage appears to be Ground Zero for this issue.
According to an April 2015 survey conducted by Gladiator GarageWorks, one out of four Americans can't fit a single car into their garage. One-third said they keep their garage doors shut out of embarrassment.
That's even more remarkable considering that 92% of those surveyed said their homes are somewhat or very organized.
"People take great pride in their homes – organizing, decorating and showing off various rooms of their house, especially on social media," said Karl Champley, builder and home improvement TV/radio personality. "But the garage is the forgotten room of the home, and those same people who are proud of their home are embarrassed by how the garage looks."
Messy garages don't end in clutter. One out of five survey respondents said they've gotten into arguments with their spouses over the disarray.
That said, not everyone intends to use their garage for car storage. Many people -- 27% -- said they use their garage for hobbies and personal projects, as well as automotive work (23%), woodworking or carpentry (19%) and sports or exercise (13%).
One thing many agree on -- 74% -- is that they wish their garage was better-organized.
