Contemporary and transitional design rules in kitchen and bath

Contemporary is king -- and transitional is too. That's according to the 2017 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends Report released by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).

The research suggests North American homeowners are more interested in modern looks over the previously popular traditional styles.

Among the two, transitional is the most preferred style, followed by contemporary and traditional.

One thing that still hasn't fallen out of fashion: neutral color palettes, especially whites and grays.

The survey also noted an increase in awareness for universal design features and aging-in-place elements among homeowners. Designs that encourage safety and comfort continue to be the most popular amenities in both kitchens and baths.

Many respondents (an increasing amount) also noted the need for technological features, like hidden electrical outlets and accessible charging and docking stations.

"Kitchens and bathrooms are literally the heart of our homes, and the trends are ever-changing," said NKBA CEO Bill Darcy. "Our annual Design Trends Report demonstrates that our members are on the cutting-edge of what is most popular in our industry."
