Confirmed: Depot reports data breach

2/20/2018

The Home Depot’s latest update confirms what many had suspected – the data systems of the world’s largest home improvement retailer have been breached.

The impact and scope of the breach remains unclear, but the retailer said the breach “could potentially impact customers using payment cards at its U.S. and Canadian stores.”

The Atlanta-based company reiterated that no customers will be liable for fraudulent charges. Customers will also be offered free ID protection, including credit-monitoring services.

There is no evidence that stores in Mexico or customers who shopped online at Homedepot.com were affected by the data breach, the company said. Also, there was no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised.

The investigation into the breach began early Sept. 2, when the company received reports of unusual activity that might have signaled a breach. Chairman and CEO Frank Blake addressed the topic during an investor conference late last week. The latest update came Monday afternoon.

According to the company, the investigation is focused on events beginning in April of this year.

“We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes our customers, and I want to thank them for their patience and support as we work through this issue,” said Blake.
