Building material dealers post gains
Building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers showed a 1.4% sales gain in December, compared to the previous month.
That’s from the Advance Monthly Sales Report released Thursday morning by the U.S. Census Bureau. The broad category of hardware and building supply dealers (NAICS 444) was up 2.0% compared to December 2018.
On a month-to-month basis, NAICS 444 sales growth were among the leaders. But on an annual basis, NAICS trailed most of the other retail classifications.
Overall, the advance estimate of U.S. retail and food services sales for December was $529.6 billion, up 0.3% over November on an adjusted basis. Compared to a year ago, December sales for the retail industry as a whole were up 5.8%.
On a year-over-year basis, the fastest growing category of retail was nonstore retailers, up 19.2%.
