Boise Cascade sales up 21%

5/4/2018
Boise Cascade reported first quarter 2018 net sales of $1.2 billion, a 21% increase from sales of $974 million in the first quarter 2017.

The building products manufacturer and distributor also reported a first quarter net income of $37 million for the period, a 254% increase from a net income of $10 million for the same period a year ago.

Sales in its Wood Products business, including sales to Boise’s Building Materials Distribution (BMD) division, rose 22% to $398.0 million for the three months ended March 3.

The improvement in segment income was due primarily to higher sales prices of plywood, engineered wood products (EWP), and lumber. These improvements were offset partially by higher log costs, as well as oriented strand board (OSB) costs used in the manufacture of I-joists.

BMD`s sales, also increased 22%, to $992.4 million for the quarter. The overall increase in sales was driven by sales price and sales volume increases of 14% and 8%, respectively. By product line, commodity sales increased 29%, general line product sales increased 14%, and sales of EWP - substantially all of which is sourced through our Wood Products segment - increased 16%, Boise said.
